Google\'s horrible new policy on using real names in Google+ effectively means that the service is now a danger to real people. You have to ask yourself why a company that pledged to not be evil would do this.

At mid-day on Friday, September 23, 2011, the popular alternative news blog, ActivistPost.com, was taken offline. Activist Post receives over one million views per month and has been hosted by Google’s Blogger since its founding in June 2010.

Within days of Google Plus' launch, people began complaining, often vociferously, that the service's banning of pseudonyms left vulnerable victims of stalking and harassment, people with sensitive jobs who feared getting fired, former victims of abuse and any number of people in especially sensitive situations.

Sorry Android. You get by with having this reputation of being open but in reality you're the least open/most closed "open platform" around. In a study with eight other platforms, Android finished dead last. And it wasn't even close.

http://ca.gawker.com/5800868/how-google-spies-on-...

Google is quietly mining your Gmail contacts database to figure out which competing social networks you belong to. When it discovers one, it "suggests" that you vacuum the outside account into your Google account so that Google can exploit the data within its own services. The practice of monitoring users' email address books to better compete with Facebook appears to be the furthest — and most arguably "evil" — step Google has yet taken with Gmail or indeed with any sensitive personal information with which it is entrusted.

Internet users, who may have one or multiple accounts through Google, whether they’re for Gmail, YouTube, Blogger, AdSense, or other services, now seem to be forced to give Google their mobile phone number in order to maintain their services.

The problem is not just privacy, is much deeper and has cultural roots. Lets imagine that all our personal data is perfectly protected, that Google has it but no one is ever going to see it, is it enought? No, not at all, cuz all that data is used to annoy us with personalized marketing, customized advertisment. The sad thing is that most people rather to give away their data and to tolerate the advertisment just to get a free storage service, wich, really, isn't as great as it seams...

For more on the issue, check this great independent editorial: http://www.riorevuelto.org/site/index.php?text=view&tipo=&bot=&id_articulo=5418&idioma=en

Any corporation that exist is essentially an arm of the government in that it is widely accepted in our culture for that company to give any and all information to the government upon request. People are either against this sharing of information or are okay with it. The ratio of said two types of people changes when you use boxed in questions like "What about police using this information to capture a child rapist?"

Whether Google is CIA or not they would collect the type of data they do simply because its invaluable and because they can.

I think its important legislation be promoted that either protects the information, which will fail. Or Legislation that insist on a persons right to protect their own information combined with an open source response that creates software and hardware that protects users and we need someone who can package it and sell it to the masses. It needs to be commonplace or even anonymity can give you away.
